Title: Smf slow loading
Post by: itsjustme on December 02, 2005, 09:36:25 AM
Hi,

I am working on this site:

http://wannafindit.com

when you go to the forum, stores and hot deals loads real slow.  sometimes 22 seconds and more.

I posted at the smf forums, and so far no luck.

Any ideas where to start?

Dave

Hi Dave,

Per the followup email you sent, the server settings may definitely be the issue here.  You definitely don't want to have godaddy servers set anywhere in your SMF install.

Also, from the screenshot you sent, your smf database connection settings are wrong.  Your database username has to be in the format of accountusername_dbusername.

I will reply back to your email as well.

Regards,
Jason

While I'm thinking about it...is your forum not locked on your old host?  If not, you may have been posting back on that old database this whole time.

that happened when i re ran repair_settings, yesterday.

Ok, but the fourm works well except for those two threads.  But I will go back and make sure that it is locked at godaddy.

I deleted the database at nogodaddy.  No going back Now!

Well, that's one way of ruling that out!  :)

Did you back it up locally again just in case?  If not, you may have lost posts made since you moved your site two nights back.

All posts are there.

I changed the settings on the edit settings page, and it crashed the board.

I redid repair_settings and the only way I get the board to work is with the settings I sent you.

very strange.

Again, the other boards on that forum work.  SSI's work.  Fast, too.  Most of the home page is ssi.

the only time I was connecting with the old server was when I ran the repair_settings, yesterday.

Can you create and email me an admin user acct for your forum?

I don't have ftp where I am so I might need to wait until tonight to check a few files manually, but that setting you sent me in the screenshot should not be working on your Charlottezweb account.

I am just thinking out loud here...

i do not think I lost any posts to the other server, when I used repair settings and did not catch the go daddy server thing.

it appears all my posts are intact.

However, if I am wrong, could the db be messed up because it is looking for posts that are somehow not in the board?

Because, the other three boards on the forum have not had any posts in it since the move...

and they load fast as lightning

Well, I can't rule that out.  But I ran "Recount all forum totals and statistics" in your admin which I think would repair that.  Maybe not though, so that may be something to pursue.

I added to your post on SMF's forum so we'll see if we get any more replies there as well...

per that last post in smf forums, I

went to phpmyadmin
selected the database
selected structure
checked all
with the "with selected" check box I selected repair, then check, then optimize

That's correct.  I ran it within your admin panel earlier as well, so we definitely have that covered.

If we don't get anything concrete back from there today, let's upgrade your forum to the latest release (1.1 RC 1). That would rule out any special character incompatabilities with the version of php we're on if that's even an issue.  Not to mention, that tends to solve all sorts of problems from time to time :)

I was gone for an hour.

I upgraded the other forum, and we have had a lot of problems ie..time outs, unread posts not working....so I was kind of waiting until the next rc.  But if you think that's the problem, we should do it then.

I would recommend we backup everything (files and db) and then do it.  For a forum this size, it would be no problem to revert if needed so long as you backup everything first.

I can do it for you later tonight or tomorrow if you'd prefer.

I'll give it a whirl.  The upgrade went pretty well with the other forum, just those problems I mentioned.

Thanks for your help.

did you change settings.php to read only?
Title: Re: Smf slow loading
Post by: Jason on December 02, 2005, 03:40:56 PM
No, I haven't touched any files today.  I don't have access from where I am right now.
Title: Re: Smf slow loading
Post by: itsjustme on December 02, 2005, 03:43:23 PM
maybe it's because I put that line in for debug...I take it out.

The reason I ask is I went to check everything before I saved the db and everything is greyed out on edit server pages and near the top of the page it says

These settings cannot be changed because Settings.php is read only

Just making sure.

Yeah, I didn't do it, but it sounds like you chmodded the file somehow.
Title: Re: Smf slow loading
Post by: itsjustme on December 02, 2005, 03:49:55 PM
Hmmm...I know what I did...I downloaded settings.php, added the debug line, saved it as something else so I  had a local copy of orginal in case of problems, uploaded the changed file, deleted original file on server, renamed changed file to settings.php.

So I didn't check it, to see if was 777.  Lesson learned!

Hi,

http://wannafindit.com/forum/index.php

all the ssi's work great off the home page, it's just those two boards, stores and hot deals

Jason, I am going to put the settings .php back.

I am getting ready for the upgrade now.

ok, can I have an admin account too? Maybe just yours or Jasons, I don't need a whole other account, feel free to PM here, or on the SMF board. I'm on both of them now and I found your topic.

Title: Re: Smf slow loading

The following I don't think are causing the problem, but should be known ;)

Delete these files, they are old...

InstantMessage.php
InstantMessage.template.php
InstantMessage.english.php

re-upload this file because it is missing...

/Sources/Reminder.php

I'm going to continue to look...

Yeah, that was me sorry, got click happy and clicked the wrong thing :-X The good news is, trying to get to those boards causes 0 errors, the bad news is that it doesn't explain what's happening then :P

you post...the "new" icon comes up , but the post is not not showing under last post, nor is there a post when I check the thread

Title: Re: Smf slow loading

OK, it's fast now... at least the Hot Deals board :)

What's going on is, for some reason the HTML you where using in your posts was slowing it down, so I switched it all the BBC code, and it's blazin fast now :)

ok, I struggled (mentally) with changing the code too much, because they all say you have to post it as is.

But man, that is fast.

Thanks.
Title: Re: Smf slow loading
Post by: Mark on December 02, 2005, 06:40:23 PM
hehe yes! Unfortunatly though, I only did the 1st page, so the rest of the pages on the board are going to be slow, so you can either delete the topics (if you don't need them) or go in and change all the HTML to BBC yourself. And you'll have to fix the Stores board too, I didn't have time to switch those.

Thanks again.  I can change them up.  We use it that way in the other forum,  I just tried it this way, and it was working ok (when there was only one or two post) so I just kept going.

Very cool.  Very Happy!

Well, it seems I got here just in time for the resolution?  haha, glad I could help :P

Thanks KP!

So it was due to using html in the posts vs. bbc tags?
Title: Re: Smf slow loading
Post by: itsjustme on December 02, 2005, 11:00:35 PM
Yes.  Although he is questioning why it is causing a problem.  Once I start changing over to bbc, it starts to fly.

It seems they are going to continue to discuss it, as if html should work ok.

Glad we got to the bottom of it.

KB is awesome.  I watched him fly through boards, settings, and he changed the bbc in the first page (ten topics) in NO time at all.  All very cool.

When you have some time Jason, let me know about additional storage for the other place.  I guess I am not going to feel comfortable until we set aside a gig for the attachments alone.

All the best, ( and thanks for the attention today!)

Dave

No problem.  I'm going to head to bed now but I'll be around all day tomorrow.

Did you need more space than 1.5 gigs (that comes with the Premium package level)?

Jason

Get some sleep, we can discuss in the next few days. I'll get the stats ready and you can see what you think I need.  I would think that should be ok, but we'll see.

Thanks,
