Google Hires Internet Pioneer

September 2005 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Search giant Google (google.com) announced on Thursday it has named Vint Cerf, one of the founding fathers of the Internet, as its "chief Internet evangelist." Cerf, who helped to define the way the Internet works, will join Google on October 3, 2005.

He joins Google from MCI where he worked on technology strategy and advanced networking technologies. In this new position, Cerf will help to shape Google's strategy and the technologies it supports. And despite the title, Cerf is aiming to be more than just a figurehead or visionary for the company.

Cerf was involved with the Internet even before it even existed. He was part of the network engineering group that oversaw the creation of Arpanet. He will continue as chairman of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees the net's addressing system.

"What Google has really been doing is building an entirely new infrastructure. And whenever you do that, it creates opportunities for new applications," said Cerf.
