Title: Cyclone soon to be headed your way!
Post by: Jason on November 22, 2005, 07:31:56 PM
I hinted at our newest server and you (present clients) voted on her name...

Here she is, I present "Cyclone!"

Dual Opteron 244
2 GB ram
2 x 120 GB SATA drives
running CentOS 4.1

This is our first deviation from Ev1 as our sole provider.  Don't get me wrong, I've had nothing but great success with Ev1 (ev1servers.net) as our datacenter, but I've been working with GNAX for well over a year now and I've seen and heard nothing but incredible feedback on them.  Geographically speaking, they're not far from EV1 (actually, our daily backups have been to GNAX servers all along) and their network is beyond amazing.  They're less than a 3 hr drive from my house and I plan to visit them onsite as soon as my schedule allows.

As I "burn-in" this server with test accounts, I will completely alter the parts of Charlottezweb.com that refer to our datacenter to add GNAX information as well.  Assuming all goes well, I hope to start directing future business their way.  I will try to provide some posts soon on my decision to go this route and why I think you'll be MORE than pleased that I did.  :)

Note:  I have no intention of leaving EV1, nor will any accounts on Thunder and Lightning be impacted at this time.

The server has been online and running like a charm for two months now (un-occupied) and is being secured/hardened as we speak.  Once we have her completely configured and secure, I'll run a few test accounts and begin installing.

Cheers,
Jason

jason,

with 240GB space, probably 200GB after server installs, how many clients are you putting on cyclone when even the premium accounts only have 1.5GB storage?

im guessing you can put well over 100 if not 200 easy. the reason i ask is because i though i read somewhere that you only put 30 people avg on each server. but that has to be wrong lol. its not enough to even use 1 hard drive.

ok just curious. thanks!

No, 30 is way too few.  My other servers have about 90 accounts each.  In some cases, servers the spec's of ours can hold well over a few hundred, so we're definitely not pushing limits here.  More importantly, I base capacity on server load in addition to disk space.

Also, I only install to 1 harddrive, not both.  So this server total only has 120gigs from my perspective.  The secondary drive is purely for daily/weekly/monthly local backups.

Even if I sold only premium accounts, I could fit 80 without overselling (minus the system files of course), so when you factor in the smaller account sizes -- my biggest seller being the smaller ones, you can get the larger picture of how it fits together.  :)

Regards,
Jason
