Title: Tiny Portal - SMF Portal
Post by: WSA on February 06, 2006, 01:15:18 PM
If you are running SMF as your forum of choice and are looking for an excellent portal for it, I would suggest you try using Tiny Portal.

This is taken from the site:
"TinyPortal is a package which adds a website to your Simple Machines Forum. A substantial website can be created around your forum using the same theme and navigation tools as SMF. The end result is a website/forum with a completely integrated look and feel.

TinyPortal is lightweight, fast and uses the same member database and login as SMF. Designed specifically for SMF, it complements the forum perfectly and won't interfere with or slow down your members at all.

Using the menu driven TinyPortal Admin Panel, you can configure anything from a minimal addition to a comprehensive website. In a minimal configuration, it serves as an entry point for your forum displaying welcome information, news articles, or the latest posts from your forum.

In a more comprehensive setup, you can add blocks arranged in left, right and center columns. Each block can be configured to display menus, search, recent topics, shoutbox, javascript, html, php, SSI functions and RSS feeds. You can add menus linking to substantial levels of html pages organized in categories and sub-categories. Of course, if you are experienced with modifying templates and PHP scripts, you can even further customize Tiny Portal to suit your requirements.

With TinyPortal, your forum becomes a complete website featuring new information tools, fast access to different areas of your site and deep levels of additional content for your members. And best of all, it is purpose built to integrate smoothly and efficiently with your Simple Machines Forum."

I have used Mambo, Joomla, PHPNuke, MKPortal, and Simple Portal in the past and none of them did what Tiny Portal does.  Yes, they may have more options and other things like that but getting them set-up to communicate with SMF can be a pain in the rear.  They are also pretty difficult to understand and use.  At least for a retard like me.

Tiny Portal is a gem for people that don't really understand PHP and it can actually be installed using the SMF package manager.  That makes it very simple.  Tiny Portal is actually designed to fit around SMF unlike other portals that you have to make SMF fit into their scheme.  If you are looking for a portal, check out TP.  You can see it in use on my site at http://westernslopeanglers.com (http://westernslopeanglers.com) and it is available at http://tinyportal.net (http://tinyportal.net). I think it's great.

Great post.

I know of at least one other person right now that's supposedly installing it.

I have a possible site in mind myself, but that's a little low on my list due to the number of projects I have to finish before I can get that far!  Actually, I have two implementations where this may be useful...

Really is a great piece of work.

Had it running for a few months now - just upgraded toTP0.86 and SMF1.1RC2 - great combination.
