I've recently signed up with the WorstHost.com and have been looking around to other places while waiting for someone to answer my help ticket at the aforementioned site. (2 days still waiting). I think what struck me the most about Charlottezweb forums is the positive and happy energy. And Jason, do you ever sleep? It seems you have your eye on everyone like a proud papa that keeps everyone running fast and smooth.

So many other sites have their forums filled with * not working, etc. but not here. This seems to be a jewel and can't seem to find anything other than you are small compared to many others. Do you add servers to keep a good balance so everyone has good performance? And the SMF connection issues so many others have, have you found a way to remedy that? How about hand holding support while getting everything setup? I am clueless to configurations and what needs to be done after uploading a site.

Thank you for your time.

Hi there, thanks for the post.  :)

Sleep is optional.  Honestly though, there are times where it doesn't work but for the most part I do.  (So if you open a support ticket in the middle of the night, it probably won't get answered for several hours).  However, if a server were to go down, that gets worked immediately whether I'm around or not.

To answer the capacity question, I typically build a new server and install to it until it gets to be filled to the level that is acceptable for me.  Generally this number is FAR lower than what the server could handle which keeps things fast for my customers.  I do not oversell.

What SMF "connection issues" are you referring to?

Sure, I can help transfer your site to get it running.  If you need ongoing configuration changes and things like that, that wouldn't be included necessarily but I often help move sites over.

Cheers,
Jason

Forum worked fine for half the admin setting up I was doing and then: Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.  I'm not concerned with that error anymore, I believe it was a Host issue and I cancelled my account after their reply came 5 hrs later that said it was the firewall on my computer. That is the first thing I turn off when I have a connection issue.

For the help I was referring to, I've read so many host forums they are now blurred. But one thing they all have in common is people talking about getting hacked and security. Is there a ToDo list somewhere that I would need to do once I upload or is the security for the site good to go 'out of the box' so to speak?

Thank you,

Gid

SMF by itself should be good to go if you keep it current (when new releases come out) and use strong passwords, which is really the case with anything.

The place where security can come in to play on ocassion is with any mods you install that change the functionality.  I wouldn't worry at all about a stock SMF install as long as you keep it current.

The SMF Connection errors typically mean either:

1.) Your database connection settings are incorrect in Settings.php.  This doesn't sound like your problem if it was working after the install completed.

2.) The database isn't reachable due to either too much activity (more users than the service is configured to allow) or the mysql service is down.

Cheers,
Jason
