July 27, 2004 :: New Server Announcement

As a followup to an email to all clients 2 weeks back, the new server is now online and performing smoothly since its initialization. 

For non-clients, we were having issues with the inability to upgrade the prior server's memory (it was maxed at 1 gig) and I have always felt strongly about keeping the server at a more than industry-considered optimal levels to prevent problems before they surface.  Due to hitting the wall on that memory, we have upgraded to the highest spec server that our datacenter offers to keep us from having to replace that box down the road.

The new machine features:
Dual (2) Xeon processors (hyperthreaded to appear to the OS as four)
2 gigs of memory
2x 73 gig drives
and more...

It's quite a powerhouse as many of you will recognize.   

I will begin moving accounts tonight and will be emailing all current clients over the next two weeks to schedule a convenient time to move your sites.  All design clients will be moved automatically with no downtime or disruption of any kind.  You will be informed by email once the move has been completed.

For hosting clients with dynamic sites, we will coordinate with you to roll everything over so that there will be no downtime and only a minimal 'lockdown' of your databases needed. 

All clients will need to update their nameservers, though DNS zones have already been manipulated on the servers to update within 1 hour so that everyone will be hitting the new server even during the normal dns propagation periods.  More information will be provided on this when we coordinate the moves.  If you have your domain registered through Charlottezweb, we will handle all necessary updates for you as we move your site.

For prospective clients, any new signups today will continue to load to the current server.  I will make a formal announcement once the new server is available for new signups which should be sometime towards the end of this week.

As an update...

I'm waiting to hear back from just a hand-full of clients.  All other clients have been completely moved and new signups have been installing to the new server as of last week.

If you have anything else on the old server that you may need, please back it up to your own pc at some point this week.  We are planning to shut down the old server at the end of this week on Friday or Saturday (Aug 13/14).

As an update, our second one of these identical boxes was brought online this past Monday.  Now we have the twins:  thunder.charlottezweb.com and lightning.charlottezweb.com.  Enjoy!
