Should we remove Urchin temporarily until cPanel releases a change to repair the ability to enable/disable it on a per-account basis?

We've been having issues with multiple users lately that has prompted this thread.  Urchin is one of the add-on features we offer that allows for graphical viewing of your website stats.  There are multiple other (non-graphical) packages available in your cPanel already so you won't lose your abilty to track stats.

The problem lately is that for some accounts, Urchin processes a lot of information and can literally eat up your storage allotments in less than a day.  We have several people having this problem presently.  When that occurs, it impacts your ability to receive mail, upload files, etc...  For some people, it's causing their site functionality to become seriously disrupted.

We've been researching this for several days now in an attempt to find a work around.  Unfortunately, the way that cPanel integrates with Urchin causes it to rebuild the profile every time it runs.  This means that deleting these files or disabling the urchin profile doesn't solve it.  cPanel merely starts it again the next day.

This is a known issue in the cPanel world and they have created the ability to enable or disable Urchin on a per-account basis.  However, this is in a beta version of cPanel that would not be safe to upgrade to until it's been tested more.

Therefore, I propose we REMOVE the functionality of Urchin completely from all servers while we wait for this new feature in cpanel to move from beta to stable.  At that time, we can re-add it back and can handle issues on an account by account basis as needed.  As I said above, there are multiple other (non-graphical) packages available in your cPanel already so you won't lose your abilty to track stats.

Please vote as quickly as possible and if you vote no, please let me know why.  I will have to base my decision within the next 48hrs (or less if necessary) on what feedback I get so I appreciate your quick input.  Thanks!

Jason

Marcobarrera, you know that even if you delete the folder the entire thing comes back including what you just deleted right? It's probably best to try and remove it for the moment.

Well, it's presently 5:1 in favor of removing it.  I'll see if we get further votes throughout the day and act on it this weekend.

6 votes (including mine) is an extremely low volume considering how many people received emails to vote, but I guess that's like any other voting turn-out these days :)

Urchin has now been removed on both servers.  It will be reinstalled as soon as cpanel-stable includes the functionality to disable it on a per-account basis.

There is a new update in the member's only forum area.  Urchin may soon be re-added to Thunder and Lightning.

Details will follow once initial testing and confirmation is complete.
