Hi,

I am looking to move here soon, and am playing around with Modx. I've not read of any issues, such as load, being raised as a concern, but wondered if anyone is using it on Charlottezweb servers. There is no reason for me suspect problems, but it does pay to ask, just in case. ;)

Thanks.

Jason

Hi Knu,

Interesting CMS.  I haven't personally tried it but it looks pretty neat.

I think a lot of us use Joomla and Wordpress but I can't see any reason you couldn't successfully run it here.

Cheers,
Jason

It is interesting.

I'm a complete amateur, and have no coding knowledge, but even I appreciate the power of it. What is more, I found Joomla so completely unintuitive. If you know CSS, setting up a template, and moving your pages across to Modx is so simple. There are trickier options available, and I'm struggling a bit, but that is because they are not aiming at people like me. They are planning, however, to expand documentation to help newbies with the more powerful options.

They also have an SMF bridge! - It's not great, and a bit buggy, but they continue to work upon it. There are also hints of some greater intergration with the next or forthcoming release.

Very friendly forum too. - Like here! ;)

Sounds promising.  I just integrated Joomla into a layout I built first and I got it working, but I think it could've been much easier to do if it was designed with that sort of customization in mind.

Assuming you have static pages, and they use CSS, it is this simple:

Take your standard page; strip out the content part; this is your template, and very easy to set up. You can either link to your CSS files outside of the Modx system, or even manage them from inside. - You can even have code to switch CSS files with different pages, but keep the same template.

In a menu tree, you set up your individual pages using  the stripped out "content" part of each page, the actual HTML, nothing more, nothing less.

The only other thing, you might like to use, is the automatic menu system, that makes use of the ID assigned to each page.

You can also use SEF URLs with aliases, so you have the prettiest addresses! :)

I know this is what all CMS's are supposed to be about, but from my limited experience, they are something different, an approximation of this. Modx is capable of far more than just skinning some static webpages though. I just wish I understood PHP to take full advantage of it. As it is, I will use "snippets" and "widgets" that are published. It's even tempting me to learn PHP! :D

Wow, sounds like the won over a spokesperson!

Well, wait until I understand PHP better! ;D

Good products/services deserve to be talked up, just as poor ones deserve to be shouted down. - I notice at the SMF forum, you've had excellent feedback. ;)

I'm using Joomla and I am a novice, but find it pretty good and simple... even for me :)  I've never heard of Modx

Have you checked out Tiny Portal yet?  It's a CMP designed specifically for SMF and is very easy to use also.  There is no bridge required as it was designed specifically for SMF.

This is what I am using on my site.  http://westernslopeanglers.com  It has been very easy for me to use and I don't understand coding at all.  Php, html, css, or any of that stuff.  I am a complete idiot when it comes to this stuff and it has worked awesome for me.

It is a free CMP and you can check it out here.  http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php  Awesome support group also.
