July 2, 2004 :: Rsync setup may cause a few 2-3 minute http restarts

We are in the process of configuring an exciting new backup system for our services.  A more detailed announcment will be made in the following days once it has been fully setup and operating as planned.  In the meantime, this may cause a few spikes in server loads over the next few days.  Worse-case scenario, you may notice a 2-3 minute http outtage here and there if the loads become high enough.  This is done to ensure that the server doesn't really overload and crash.  These are nothing to be worried about, and during the outtage, all services such as email, ftp, etc. will continue to function except for the ability to view your pages online.  Again, these outtages are typically 2-3minutes in length only if they happen to occur.

As always, I want to provide you with the information beforehand so that you aren't worried if you notice this.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Jason

As a continued fyi, these backups are not yet in place.  Some current configurations have inhibited progress, though an "rsync expert" is scheduled to look into this next week.  For now, the server has been modified to ensure that we don't experience the outtages referenced above.  After the system is modified next week, I'll alert everyone again, though the outtages should not even be an issue at that time.

The "more detailed" announcement will still be made as promised once we cross the first part of this process.

Jason

I wanted to update this thread to post that since this was originally opened, there were issues on several ends that prevented rsync from properly functioning.  As part of the solution, the previous server was replaced with the highest spec server offered at our datacenter and a new rsync provider was contacted.  As of this week, rsync backups are in place and functioning perfectly.  All client data is backed up offsite nightly at no additional charge for all hosting clients in addition to our onsite local backup solutions.
