Hi all, I am getting some core files in my SMF root directory and was not too concerned by them (they were only about 100K in size) until this morning when I found a 20 megabyte core-dump file - that's 10% of my disk space quota!

Is anyone else having this problem, and how can I disable and/or stop these core-dumps from being stored there?

Which mods are installed to your forum?

Beat me to it!  :)

When I got the alert for this thread that was going to be my first question given what we went through.  We never heard anything back yet about that mod did we?

Jason, would if help if you grabbed the core file and examined it with gdb?

I would download and test this debug method myself if it wasn't so large.

Steve

ok, thanks, i'm waiting for Jason's response.

Steve's forum had the same thing happen when we migrated his account over.  He was able to work with SMF support and narrow it down to the auto/video embed mod (Steve, correct me if I'm wrong).  I'd have to find the thread on it on SMF (and it may be in the Charter Support area -- can't recall) but a member of the SMF dev team confirmed the same issue.

When we looked at the core dumps his forum created, we didn't find anything specific but Steve was able to narrow it down through testing.

I can take a look but it may be the same situation where we don't see a cause but that particular mod would be my initial focus based on what we've experienced so far with it...

Steve

The topic is in the 'Charter Members' forum. So, if you are not a charter member you will not be able to see it.

I found a temporary solution, but let first Jason to check if this is the same issue or something else.

I'm not sure if this is a mod problem or some security restrictions of the server.

Thanks Guys.

Jason, can you please tell me when core.13359 was dumped?

(I can't see how to do this via cpanel's filemanagers)

Hi Steve, what is ftp manager?

In cpanel, there are:

FTP Accounts
Anonymous FTP
FTP Session Control

I (briefly) checked those 3 programs out but none of them seemed to give me a view of a file's date/time.

Jason

I think he means using an ftp program -- not within cPanel.

To answer your earlier question, you have three core files presently that were created:

Aug 18 15:10 core.13359
Aug 19 02:35 core.2335
Aug 19 20:37 core.6343

I'll look into this later today.

Jason

Bootleg,

Would you mind providing me a temp admin login to your forum so I can make a test post to try something?

If you can PM me a temp acct, that would be great.  Actually, it doesn't have to be admin really, but I may need you to delete a post afterwards depending on how you have your forum setup.

On a side note, it does look like that thread on SMF has other people seeing this issue with that mod.  Until they get their hands around the problem and fix it, you may have to either deal with deleting those core dumps if you continue to get them or to uninstall that mod for now.

Steve, I tried doing your test on my site (not on the same server) and it hasn't created any files yet.  Of course, I don't have any mods installed so I wasn't expecting it to anyway.

Thanks Steve, I will configure a client forthwith - being able to see a file's modify times is a must!  I'm a bit surprised neither of cpanel's filemanagers display it.

Thanks - none of those times match anything from my SMF error log.  Is the numerical suffix on those files the PID of the php interpreter?  Or?

Done, the details are in your email.  You are invited to make a post about the forum's main subject matter while you're there : )

I'm watching out for new core dumps and we have a bit of space (120+ megs) available so there's no urgency on this one - until I wake up one morning and find another 5 of them!

How often is Steve's forum experiencing this problem (eg core dumps / day) ?
