On the evening of September 2, 2010, I will be initiating a switchover of our DNS systems from the current platform our dynamic dns provider uses to their new system.

What does this mean?
Basically, they have a new platform they've been testing since 2009 that manages their dynamic dns and I will be converting us to that new system on Thursday.  It offers some advantages though at the same time, we will need to convert eventually and I'm confident about doing so now.

What will I see?
If all goes well, this will be completely invisible to everyone.

What's the worst that could happen?
If something goes incredibly wrong, Charlottezweb dns could be temporarily impacted leading to possible resolution issues.  This is a worst case scenario but I'd like to make you aware of all options just in case.

The conversion is a multi-step process and I've actually already completed half of it.  After validating again that everything looks good, it's a matter of clicking a button to activate the settings.  I'm going to give it a few more days to review the setup.

If anything changes, I will update this thread.  Otherwise, I will respond here once the change is complete.

Regards,
Jason

As a follow-up, I waited until this morning to make this change after talking to our dns provider yesterday afternoon.  There was no concern on their end however they don't have 24 hour support so I felt it would serve us best to make the change this morning to ensure I could reach them in the event something problematic arose.

Based on their documentation, we've crossed into the safe zone in terms of how many hours their system takes to update.  It should be safe to assume that any problems we might face would've occurred by now.  Of course, I'll continue to monitor things but as of now, I'm considering this activity complete.

While I was reviewing the new setup, I'd thought I'd share a neat little bit of info -- we're averaging over 200,000 queries to our nameservers per day with last month totaling around 6.5 million requests.  Not too shabby!  :)
